Common washer problem
Washer Not Agitating Las Vegas
A washer not agitating means the machine fills and runs but the laundry barely moves, so loads come out much as they went in. It is a frustrating fault because the washer appears to be working, and it is one where the design of your particular machine changes the answer completely.
The first question a technician will ask is whether your washer has a tall centre agitator or a flat wash plate at the bottom of the drum. That single detail splits this complaint into two quite different diagnoses.
Agitator machines versus impeller machines
Traditional top-load washers use a tall centre agitator that twists back and forth, pushing clothes through the water. When that stops working the failure is obvious, because the agitator visibly does not move or moves without carrying the laundry with it.
High-efficiency top-load machines replaced the agitator with a low-profile wash plate, or impeller, that creates water movement instead. Clothes rub against each other rather than against a central post, and the visible motion is much gentler. Owners moving from an older machine often think the new one is broken when it is behaving exactly as designed.
Overloading
The most common cause of poor wash action on any machine is simply too much laundry. A packed drum leaves no room for clothes to move, so they sit as a solid mass while the machine runs its cycle.
Test it: run a half-full load and watch through the lid or door. If the laundry moves properly, the machine is fine and the loads have been too large. High-efficiency machines are particularly sensitive here, because they rely on clothes rubbing against each other to clean.
- Drum packed above the recommended fill line
- Bulky items filling most of the drum on their own
- Laundry that comes out dry in patches
- Detergent residue left on clothing after a wash
Drive components on agitator washers
On a traditional agitator machine that fills and drains normally but will not agitate, the mechanical causes are well-known. Agitator dogs, the small plastic components inside the agitator that let it grip in one direction, wear out and cause the agitator to move without driving the laundry. Drive couplings, belts and transmissions can also fail.
A useful indicator is whether you can hear the motor running. A motor that runs while nothing moves points to a broken link between motor and agitator; complete silence points elsewhere, such as the control or lid switch circuit.
Wash plate and drive faults on high-efficiency machines
On impeller machines, the wash plate itself can loosen or its drive can fail, and load sensing can also be involved. Because these washers adjust their behaviour based on what they detect in the drum, a sensing problem can present as a cycle that seems to do very little.
This is harder to judge by eye than an agitator fault, since gentle motion is normal. Compare against how the machine used to behave rather than against an older washer you once owned.
Lid switches and cycle selection
Some machines will not agitate if the lid switch is not confirming, in the same way they will not spin. And some cycles are genuinely gentler than others; a delicate or hand-wash program will move laundry far less than a normal cycle, which is easy to forget after someone else has used the machine.
Confirm the selected cycle before pursuing a mechanical diagnosis, and check whether the problem occurs on a normal cycle too.
When to call a washer technician
Call for service if the agitator does not move on a normal cycle with a light load, if the motor runs without any wash action, if there is grinding during the wash phase, or if wash quality has clearly declined over time on loads that used to come out clean.
A technician can determine whether the machine is failing mechanically or behaving as designed. On high-efficiency models that distinction genuinely matters, because it is the difference between a repair and a change in how the machine is loaded.
